Protection of Stratospheric Ozone: Listing of Substitutes for Ozone- Depleting Substances-n-propyl Bromide in Solvent Cleaning

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determines that n-propyl bromide (nPB) is an acceptable substitute for methyl chloroform and chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)–113 in the solvent cleaning sector under the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program under section 612 of the Clean Air Act. The SNAP program reviews alternatives to Class I and Class II ozone depleting substances and approves...

Perchloroethylene White Paper - Novermber 2008

Perchloroethylene, also known as tetrachloroethylene or perc, has been used safely in industry for over 50 years. It is an effective, nonfl ammable solvent that does not contribute to the formation of smog (ground-level ozone) or to the depletion of stratospheric ozone. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved the use of perchloroethylene as a replacement for stratospheric ozon...

Efficient Methods to Achieve Clean Air - Vista, December 1998 - Dallas Fed

millennium, a type of air pollution called ground-level ozone threatens future growth. Texas cities that do not meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for this type of pollution could face sharp restrictions on new businesses and could bear significant new environmental costs. Many Texas cities are either in nonattainment with EPA guidelines for ozone or close to it. Although...

Variability in surface ozone background over the United States: Implications for air quality policy

[1] The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presently uses a 40 ppbv background O3 level as a baseline in its O3 risk assessments. This background is defined as those concentrations that would exist in the absence of North American emissions. Lefohn et al. [2001] have argued that frequent occurrences of O3 concentrations above 50–60 ppbv at remote northern U.S. sites in spring are of str...

The ozone productivity of n-propyl bromide: Part 2--An exception to the Maximum Incremental Reactivity Scale.

In an earlier paper the ozone-forming potential of n-propyl bromide (NPB) was studied with a new methodology designed to address issues associated with a marginal smog-forming compound. However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) subsequently revised its policy and now recommends using the Maximum Incremental Reactivity (MIR) scale to rank the ozone-forming potential of all volatile...
